Aesthetics of Wellness (2015)

Aesthetics of Wellness is an upcoming group exhibition at Woman Made Gallery that will challenge stereotypes of what “good health” looks like by exploring a variety of holistic healing practices taking place in Chicago’s diverse, multi-ethnic communities. Importantly, the show will explore the roles that racial bias, income disparity, and social inequality play in America’s health and wellness industry as a whole. Mass-media images used to market women’s health and wellness services, for example, typically present young, slim, able-bodied white women as the sole model of what a “healthy female” should look like.

Aesthetics of Wellness will also look at the ways in which social factors such as housing, education, income and employment impact health and quality of life issues in low-income neighborhoods. To this end, we will produce pop-up yoga and meditation sessions, holistic cooking classes, and gardening workshops held at sites throughout the city; and performances and public dialogues held at Woman Made Gallery as well as in Chicago communities who typically have limited access to wellness services.

Exhibiting Artists: Zakkiyyah Dumas, Alexandria Eregbu, David Anthony Geary, Masani Landfair, Shelby Stone, Rhonda Wheatly
